About 履道応乾 (Ridō Ōken)
履道応乾 is the four-character phrase that Katō Kiyomasa used as his personal motto, inscribed on his 黒印 (kuro-in / black seal) that he affixed to official documents alongside his red signature seal (朱印 / shu-in). Source classical text: it derives from the Yijing (易経), specifically the lower trigram of the Qian (乾) hexagram and Confucian commentary.
A common gloss is: "Walk the Way (act according to one's convictions / one's proper duty), and Heaven will respond" — i.e., if one steps back and does what one ought to do, the path will surely open. It captures Kiyomasa's ethic of dutiful service tempered by personal conviction. The phrase is widely cited in Kumamoto historical scholarship and is the central conceptual frame for several of Katō Jinja's limited goshuin.
